EU-OSHA has released the Workers‘ Exposure Survey (WES) dataset on cancer risk factors in Europe. Conducted between September 2022 and February 2023, the survey involved local interviewers in Germany, Ireland, Spain, France, Hungary, and Finland, completing 24,402 valid interviews using CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interview).

The dataset includes three types of variables:

  • Demographic and job-related variables: Information such as gender, age category, country of birth, activity sector, occupation, type of employment/contract, workplace size, and job category.
  • Job-specific questions: Tailored to the worker’s job category defined at the start of the interview.
  • Exposure assessment: Evaluation of exposure to 24 cancer risk factors for each respondent, conducted after the survey fieldwork via OccIDEAS.

EU-OSHA recommends researchers focus on demographic and job-related variables, as well as exposure assessment variables, to get familiar with the data. Several documents, including the questionnaire, documentation, explanatory notes, and a list of related publications, are available to help researchers navigate the dataset.
